You hated and loved your job.

You were a nurse. And a fine one at that. You did what you could to help the people that came through but you always followed orders.

Up until this night.

You were doing your usual rounds, giving meds where they were needed, checking in on patients here and there, the all in all same routine you always did.

However…something caught your eye.

There was an overflow currently and being all backed up, a few patients and ‘non-patients’ (the deceased) were lining the hall until they could be given the proper attention.

On one of these lay a person covered in a white sheet, feeling strangely saddened by this particular cart you approached, feeling oddly curious. The deceased had never really intrigued you before now, seeing as you had seen several dead bodies working where you did, but this one….this one was different.

You approached the gurney and pulled the sheet down slightly to look at the face of this recently deceased person, your heart sticking in your throat when you saw the face of a handsome young man. You didn’t realize that you were staring until one of your co-workers approached you concerned. You hadn’t even realized you were crying.

Feeling shock at this reaction you quickly brushed the tears away and went about your business again, covering the young man’s face with the sheet and trying to push the image of him out of your mind.

Several minutes later found you still dwelling mentally on the raven haired man on the gurney, his pale skin and his eyes which had been closed far too soon for the world to be able to accept his absence.

With a jolt you shook yourself out of your musings before hurrying down the hallway again to check on another patient. A Mr. Williams whom had fallen off of a ladder breaking an arm, he needed painkillers three times a day after his meals.

After delivering the prescribed meds you were again walking the hall when you noted the young man was still there. Feeling the weight of sadness gripping your heart once again you found you were staring again, and as you were staring at the figure…you noted something odd.

A slow flutter of the sheet.

It was barely noticeable, but it was there.

Feeling shock shake you to the core you rushed over and pulled the sheet back down from his face, revealing the pale man with a scar on his cheek.

Strange. You hadn’t noticed the scar before.

You pushed two fingers up against his pulse point in his neck and waited, hoping that the cold skin wasn’t referencing to what you thought it was.

Feeling your heart sink after several moments of waiting….but then…a flutter so tiny you could barely feel it. But it was there all the same.

Feeling excitement and worry flood your veins you looked around for the closest doctor to confirm your suspicions, flagging one down as you now refused to leave the young man’s side until he had been attended too.

“Doctor! Doctor Smith! Please can I have a moment?!” You shouted at the doctor who was giving an odd look, noting where you were standing. Regardless he approached you.

“Yes? What do you need?” He asked as he walked up to you giving you another once over.

“I have reason to believe that this young man still has a beating heart,” You stated as the doctors eyes widened.

“What do you mean, Nurse? This man was shot to death…..he was pronounced dead at the scene,” The doctor said as he moved to stand where you were and placing his fingers against the young man’s throat. “I don’t feel anything….If this is some sort of twisted prank..”

“No! No it isn’t, I swear! It’s barely there..but his heart is still beating,” You insist feeling determination running through you, giving you more nerve. You weren’t sure why…but it had suddenly become very important to you that this young man receive medical treatment for his wounds.

Doctor Smith quiets for a moment as he feels for the pulse, his eyes widening in surprise when he takes note of the barely fluttering heart, “I don’t know how the on scene staff could have missed this….Nurse….inform E.R. that a young patient will be coming in with multiple gunshot wounds.”

You rushed off to do as the doctor had instructed, feeling a little happy that you were right, though also feeling worry since you knew that in severe cases the survival rate was very low.

Rushing into the E.R. you informed the on staff surgeons who began bustling about in preparation of emergency surgery.

You watched as the gurney was rushed in and you were hurried off to go about your duties, which you did, if only half-heartedly. Your mind still being occupied with the young man, who may or may not be dead at this very moment.

Several hours later found you pacing the hallway, it was time for you to leave, your shift having officially ended an hour ago, but thoughts of the young man still permeated your brain. Feeling agitated and worried you looked up at the Emergency sign.

You stood there for another several minutes until a familiar voice broke your thoughts, “Nurse…I thought you were supposed to leave an hour ago…”

“I…I was…..I was just curious….about that young man,” You replied as your cheeks slightly reddened in embarrassment.

“Oh…..well…they should be wrapping up now, as far as I know they managed to stabilize him…feel proud of yourself..you might have saved a man’s life tonight,” The doctor said with a half-hearted smile, clapping you on the shoulder.

The words ‘might have’ sending chills down your spine as you smiled weakly back at the doctor, “Yes..well…Here’s to hoping right?”

The doctor smiled with a nod, “Right.”

You watched as he walked off, calling over his shoulder, “Go get some sleep! We need you here bright and early tomorrow!”

You sighed as you finished gathering up your things and did just that, making it back to your residence and feeding any possible pets you had.

After a light supper you clambered into bed, hoping that you’d get some rest.

Waking up early the next morning you quickly got ready, feeding and taking care of your domestic friends before heading off to work again, getting there early to see what your duties for the day were.

“Hey there, Nurse ________! You have a new patient!” A male nurse said walking up to you to collect his own schedule for the day.

“I do?” You inquired feeling mildly shocked before looking down at your schedule, he was right. Several of the patients you had been overseeing had been moved and now you were only looking after three. The name that caught your eye and spurred your interest being ‘John Doe’.

Looking at the information provided you noted with a happy tweak in your heart that it was the young man from last night. Your heart sank a little when you noted that he was currently in a coma, but being the optimist you were, you hoped he’d come out of it.

You hurried about your duties, checking in on your coma patient several times that day, and when it came to the end of your shift you made a special trip to go see him.

Looking at the bruised and bandaged man you felt sad but you just knew that he was special.

Taking a seat next to him you sighed before speaking, feeling foolish in the process.

“Hello there…..I hope you don’t mind my talking….I just wanted you to know that I’m glad you’re still alive, I shudder to think what might have happened if I hadn’t noticed,” You started your eyes flitting up to his face before returning to your neatly folded hands in your lap. “I bet you have interesting stories to tell…..n-not about…um…how you got here…though I’m sure that’s….um….nevermind…I…I should go now….if you wake up before I get back I’ll be sad.” And like that you scurried off to go home, hoping that no-one was listening to your moment of strangeness as you talked to the man in a coma.

You repeated this for several days, going about your duties then visiting the coma patient and talking to him about odds and ends or just retelling a story.

However, you were starting to not expect a response, so you were surprised when you came in one day and as you started to tell a tale about your life…you really weren’t expecting sky blue eyes to meet your own.

His eyes fluttered slowly for a few seconds before a confused look took over his handsome face, “Uh……hi….do I know you?”

You felt your cheeks redden to the shade of a tomato, “Uh…..um….n-not really…I’ve b-been your nurse for the past…m-month…..”

“Oh……Do…you know my name?” the male asked his eyes scrunching in confusion as he started looking around, hoping to find some sort of indication as to who he was.

“Oh dear……um…n-no…I was hoping you’d be able to tell me,” You stuttered feeling overwhelmed all of a sudden.

“Well…this is a pickle isn’t it,” The male chuckled catching you off guard.

“What?” You felt shocked as you watched the man snicker at his own predicament.

“You don’t know my name and neither do I…..so…..can I know yours?” He asked his blue eyes twinkling suddenly.

“M-My name is ________,” You muttered feeling your cheeks heat up again as his grin broadened.

“Well…it’s nice to meet you, _______. I would introduce myself and tell you more but I don’t know it….so…….you’re my nurse? I’m lucky you’re so cute,” He said with a mischievous grin replacing the happy one.

Your face felt as if it were on fire as you looked down at your hands which were once again neatly folded in your lap, “Oh..u-um…well…” You were caught off guard as he started laughing.

“You really are cute..geez,” He laughed out before he looked down to survey himself, “Well…I’ve certainly looked better…at least I hope I have…”

That made you laugh, “Well…You look a lot better now than when I first saw you.”

“Oh…now that’s depressing,” He stated with the twinkle back in his eyes. You continued to joke with him for several more hours about life in general, as you also attempted to curb his flirting. It was obvious that his situation bothered him, but he seemed to refuse to let it get to him.

You couldn’t help but admire this man…this mysterious stranger. One thing you did know was that he was bound to be the most interesting case you’d ever dealt with.
